Beer
Is your beer suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
We use one ingredient, which is widely used across the whole brewing industry, as a processing aid in most of our brews. Although this ingredient is not present in the final beer, it means that a majority of our beers are not suitable for vegetarians. Hogstar lager, Hogstar Juicy lager and Hazy Hog cider do not contain this ingredient.
Is your beer suitable for coeliacs or gluten-intolerant?
Barley is a key part of our brewing process and so unfortunately none of our beers are currently gluten-free. However, Little Swine will shortly be certified as gluten free, so look out for the new labels!
How many calories do your beers contain?
As a small brewery, we are not able to measure the calories of every single brew, and so we do not publish this data.
Why don't you put calorie information on your labels?
As a small brewery, we are not able to measure the calories of every single brew, so cannot publish this data.
If I am not satisfied with my beer, what should I do?
If for any reason our beer falls below your expectation, we want to know. Please contact shop@hogsback.co.uk as soon as possible, giving details of the nature of the issue, as well as when and where you purchased your beer. Please keep the bottle, can or label as this contains information that helps us track the batch. Our 500ml and 330ml bottles have a Best Before date [BBE] and a production code on the neck of the bottle. Our cans have a Best Before date [BBE] and production code on the base. Our case labels have a Best Before date. Our fresh beer has a label. The team will look into the issue and respond to you as soon as possible.
Do you brew no-alcohol beer?
We brew Little Swine Pale Ale 0.5% - a naturally brewed beer with all the flavour, just without the alcohol.
What does ABV mean?
ABV stands for Alcohol By Volume.
How many units of alcohol are in your beer?
The number of units depends on the strength of the alcohol. Our 500ml and 330ml bottles, as well as our cans, show the number of units. This is calculated by multiplying the quantity by the ABV, then dividing by 1000. For example, a 500ml bottle of TEA, with an ABV of 4.2% = (500 x 4.2)/1000 = 2.1 units.
Do you brew gluten-free beer?
Barley is a key part of our brewing process and so unfortunately none of our beers are currently gluten-free. However, Little Swine will shortly be certified as gluten free, so look out for the new labels!

Beer Containers
What size draught beer containers do you sell?
We sell from 1.75 pints to 72 pints! A 1.75 pint glass Snifter. A 3.5 pint glass Snorter. 3.5, 5.5 and 9 pint PET bottles. 20 pint and 40 pint Piggins and Pins. 5 litre Mini Kegs. 5 and 10 litre Brewery Gate Kegs with CO2 dispense system. We also do 72 pint firkins. Not all of our beers are available in these containers. Check our FRESH BEER section in the online shop.
What are “Hogs Back Piggins” and “Hogs Back Pins”?
The “Hogs Back Piggin” is 20 pints of beer and Hogs Back Pin is 40 pints of beer. They are both “boxes” of beer, with a plastic bladder inside and tap for pouring. It’s straight forward to set up and very easy to use. Check our FRESH BEER section in the online shop.
What are Snorters and Snifters?
These are our refillable glass flagons. Our Snorter holds 3.5 pints whereas the Snifter holds 1.75 pints. These keep your beer fresh, unopened, for up to a week. Once you’ve enjoyed your beer all you need to do is rinse them out and return to the Brewery for a top up of your favourite tipple.
What is a mini keg?
Our mini kegs are 5l (around 9 pints) aluminium kegs. They have a pull out tap for ease of use and can be filled with any of our beers (not Hazy Hog cider). When you get one home pop it in the fridge and it keep the beer fresh for 7 days, unopened, but then best drunk in 2 days.
Can I return a mini keg for a refill?
The mini kegs are one use but can be recycled in your normal household recycling.
What is a PET bottle?
This is a plastic bottle made from PET. We sell these in 3 sizes: 3.5, 5.5 and 9 pints. They keep the beer fresh for up to 3 days from pouring. The bottles are recyclable in your normal plastic recycling.
What is a Brewery Gate Keg?
Our Brewery Gate Kegs are a beer dispensing system with C02 that keeps beer fresh for up to 10 days. Unlike our other containers they are completely sealed, which means that the beer stays in perfect condition from the first to the last pint. You can refill these with any of our cask ales, kegged lager, or beer. They are made from food grade stainless steel, are easy to clean and refillable.
What is the difference between cask and kegged beer?
We brew both cask and kegged beer here at the Brewery for the pub and restaurant trade, as well as the for sale in the Brewery Shop, Brewery Tap and online store. The cask ale we sell to trade contains live “yeast” sediment which has to settle before the beer can be drunk. The resulting beer is called “bright” beer. The yeast means the beer lasts longer.
All the fresh beer we sell in the shop is “bright” beer and ready to drink. The only exception to this is our sedimented Piggins, Pins and firkins.
Cask ale has no added gas so all the carbonisation is natural. It is generally drunk at warmer temperatures – around 10-13°C.
The kegs we use to supply the trade hold 50 litres and the beer in them is kept under pressure so stays fresher for longer. They are more carbonated that our cask ales and are generally served at a cooler temperature, around 3-8°C. Our kegged range is Hogstar lager, Hog IPA and Hazy Hog cider. When you buy in the Brewery Shop or online, they are dispensed straight into our containers. Because they are carbonated, they can lose their carbonation over time.
Our cask ales can be purchases in all of our containers – Snifter, Snorter, PET bottles, Mini Keg, Brewery Gate Kegs, Piggins, Pins and Firkins.
Our kegged ale – Hogstar lager, Hog IPA and Hazy Hog cider can be purchased in a Snifter, Snorter, PET bottles, Brewery Gate Kegs, Piggins and Pins. Hogstar lager and Hog IPA can also be sold in Mini Kegs.
Which beers do you sell?
We sell a range of beers including ales, lagers and ciders. Check our online store for the current range of fresh beers and our bottled and canned range.
Are all your beers available in all the size containers?
All of our beers and cider can go in the Snifters, Snorters, PET containers, Pigs, Piggins and Brewery Gate Kegs.
Only our cask beers, Tongham TEA and Surrey Nirvana, plus some seasonal or specials, come in a 72 pint firkin.
The mini kegs can be filled with any of our beers including our lagers but not the Hazy Hog Cider.
How long does the beer last?
The length of time a beer lasts will depend on the beer and the container you are ordering. As a general rule, the fresher the beer, the better it will taste. Snorters, Snifters, Mini Kegs and Brewery Gate kegs will last longer than plastic bottles or Piggins and Pins.
Check the online store for your preferred beer, lager or cider.
Always drink before the “Best Before” date.
What’s the difference between bright and sedimented beer?
Sedimented beer still has “live” yeast in it. This means that, unopened, it lasts longer. Bright beer has had the sediment removed so it doesn’t require any time to settle but has a much shorter life.
Are all your beers available as sedimented?
Only our case beers are available as sedimented – Tongham TEA, Surrey Nirvana and some seasonals and limited editions. Check out the online store for the last range.
Is sedimented beer available in all sizes?
Sedimented beer is only available for cask ales in Piggins, Pins and firkins.
Why is there a deposit for a Firkin?
We use firkins for delivering to pubs and restaurants, so we need to know where all our firkins are. They are expensive to replace and so the deposit acts as a friendly reminder to bring them back to the Brewery.
Can you collect an empty Firkin?
Unfortunately we are not able to collect your Firkin.
Can you deliver fresh beer?
We can deliver all our beer via our Local Delivery service. This operates to around a 30 mile radius of the Brewery but check the postcodes in the Delivery section of the FAQs. We are only able to courier Mini Kegs and sedimented Piggins and Pins to England, Wales and parts of Scotland. See our Delivery FAQs for full details.
Can you deliver sedimented beer?
We can courier sedimented Piggins and Pins to England, Wales and parts of Scotland. See our Delivery FAQs for full details
What don’t you sell 50 litre kegs?
Our 50 litre kegs require specialist dispense systems so are not suitable for sale via our Brewery Shop. We can supply to Trade customers.
Can I pre-order beer for an event?
Yes! You can order online for most of our beers but if you are looking for a firkin or have any questions either drop an email to shop@hogsback.co.uk, call us or pop in for a chat.
Can I return fresh, sedimented, bottled or canned beer?
We regret we cannot offer returns on any fresh, sedimented, bottled or canned beers.
