TEA Total pubs: The Wooden Bridge, Guildford
Throughout the TEA Total campaign, we will be highlighting some of our favourite locals who have a fantastic history and are well worth a visit. This week we will be looking at the traditional old boozer, The Wooden Bridge.
Positioned beside the A3 in Guildford, The Wooden Bridge was opened in 1936 as a hotel offering weary travellers a nice place to stop for the night on their way down to Portsmouth. It also became a favourite for local residents and as they moved into the 1960s, developed a more rock'n'roll feel with motorbike gangs using the pub as a meeting place. The pub became a go-to venue in the Guildford music circuit at the same time with some huge names performing there including The Rolling Stones in 1963 and Status Quo. Live music is still a big part of the pub with a monthly tribute band night attracting big crowds.
It has managed to keep its traditional pub appearance with some contemporary elements. It usually has seven screens on showing sports coverage and has beautifully kept pool tables and darts board - according to the Landlord, you could meet Eric Bristow at the oche from time-to-time! A light hearted quiz is held on Thursdays at 8.30 (sometimes bingo) and there's a more formal quiz at 7.30 on Sundays.
As well as having TEA on the bar, The Wooden Bridge is often a good place to find our seasonal cask ale available at a very reasonable price. As a Cask Marque accredited pub, you are bound to get a decent pint of TEA and also makes a great place to start the Hogs Back Ale Trail on CaskFinder.
