Hop, Hop, Hurray!

Hats off to Matthew!  His hops have won three awards at the prestigious Institute of Brewing and Distilling British Hop Competition 2023.

Despite some challenging conditions this year, the judges thought the standard of the 166 samples from 35 growers was extremely high.

In the Hop Merchants Cup, awarded for the best sample of hops on the basis of their aroma, our Fuggles scooped the top prize in the best Delicate Aroma Intensity category.  Our Cascade came a creditable second in the High Aroma Intensity category.

Our heritage hop, Farnham White Bine, took the Le May Cup, awarded for the best sample of Goldings and eligible clones. 

Up against established hop growers, this was a fantastic result.  With near neighbours, Hampton Estate, taking another top honour, it’s put the traditional hop growing county of Surrey right back on the map!

The overall champion will be chosen from all 6 categories and announced in January, so fingers crossed for another accolade to add to the trophy cabinet!
