Hogs Back Brewery in Surrey has teamed up with Berkshire’s Renegade Brewery to brew Home Grown Pale Ale – a truly unique home-grown beer!

About Renegade Brewery

Renegade Brewery uses malt made from the barley grown in the Yattendon farm estate, adjacent to the brewery. They have Red Tractor accreditation and it’s like having Barley grown in your own back yard so to speak. We work with the Farm managers to select Barley varieties that are best suited to the type of soil on which they are to be grown. This in turn supports the Integrated Farm Management approach the farm managers use, as they plan and look to manage the soil health and enrich the environment with a long term view. Typically, on a 20 - 25 year horizon.

The Estate farms are at the forefront of sustainable farming, enhancing biodiversity and could be easily classified as "leading edge" in being part of the LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) demonstration farm network. It is one of 40 farms across the UK going beyond best practice to support an integrated approach to both sustainable production and supporting the environment.

As a local craft brewery, Renegade is now building a working relationship with the Farm Managers to enhance our drive for the local environment as we grow our brewing barley. What does this typically mean?

·         NO use of insecticides, increasing the drive to being biodiverse positive.

  • Promotion of Pollinators and natural "predators", through the creation of nature corridors across the farmed landscape, encouraging beneficial insects to protect/support the crops.
  • Increasing the area of land dedicated to habitat creation and supporting wider biodiversity, beyond industry targets to 15% of the farmed area. This is more than double the industry target to ensure a thriving natural environment.

About Hogs Back Brewery

Over the border in neighbouring Surrey, Hogs Back Brewery has been growing and harvesting its own hops for more than a decade in the village of Tongham.

Harvesting hops at Hogs Back Brewery

Surrey was once the pre-eminent hop growing region of Surrey, thanks to the Farnham White Bine hop, and it has always been our vision to re-establish the traditional link between hop growers and brewers.  So in 2014 we embarked on a journey to build the first new hop garden in the immediate Farnham area for over 100 years.

Our revival hop garden now spans 8½ acres. Not large by commercial hop growing standards, but the garden provides over 50% of our annual hop needs.

Three varieties of hop are grown:

Farnham White Bine– we’ve revived this heritage hop, once prized for its fine, subtle, slightly peppery character.

Traditional Fuggles– the classic English ale hop. TEA, our Traditional English Ale, is brewed with 100% Surrey Fuggles hops, providing a firm bitterness and gentle aroma.

Cascade– we are one of the few English growers of this wonderfully aromatic hop, with its strong citrus and grapefruit character.

The hops are grown, harvested, picked, dried, packed and stored on site until they are needed in the brewhouse.  The hops don’t leave our sight or site, and travel from “field to firkin” in a matter of a few hundred yards.

The hop garden is a labour of love and is overseen by our Hop Estate Manager, with the help of over 70 Hogs Back Brewery Hoppers, who volunteer in the garden throughout the year.  On Ascension Day each year, the local vicar performs a traditional Hop Blessing ceremony for an auspicious harvest and we celebrate each September with a Hop Harvest Party Weekend that attracted over 4,200 revellers in 2025.
