Beavers help in hop garden

The Hop Garden played host to Beavers from the 5th Farnham (Bourne) Scouts this week.

Working towards their Gardener Badge, the Beavers headed off into the Hop Garden to help Estate Manager Matthew with the important Hop Garden Walk Through to check that each hop plant is trained or “twiddled” up the strings.

Hops can be a bit prickly so protective gloves have to be worn!

The Beavers got stuck in. Split into four groups, each group tackled an alley each, with prizes for the best twiddling!

Then it was off to plant some sunflower seeds, which produce a crop for oil but also attract pollinators, and pea seeds, which not only taste great but help put nutrients back into the ground.

All of this will count towards their Gardener Badge, which encourages Beavers to explore gardening through hands-on activities. It focuses on plant growth, seasonal changes, and garden care, helping young Scouts develop an appreciation for nature and where food comes from.
