We're proud to support the new SIBA INDIE BEER campaign
Exiting news today as SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers and Associates) launch it's Indie Beer Campaign which aims to help consumers identify 'true' independent breweries in pubs, bars, and shops as the demand for local beer raises across the UK.
Rupert Thompson, MD and owner, stated this with regard to the Indie Beer Campaign:
"Hogs Back Brewery is very supportive of the new Indie Beer Campaign. If it is widely adopted by drinkers then it will breathe fresh life into the British beer market and ensure innovation, variety and economically sustainable local brewers".
By way of background, before the famous 'Beer Orders' in the 1980s national brewers represented about four pints in five in the UK. The Beer Orders were intended to free up the market but long term it is clear the opposite has happened. 40 years on, and Global brewers/ owners represent over 9 pints in every ten sold in the UK and most are not UK domiciled".
"We believe that Globals are a very important part of the beer scene but that power is now too concentrated in businesses that are not primarily UK focussed, and small UK brewers are foreclosed from many pub cos, and indeed supermarkets".
"But drinkers still want choice and the first step towards a more balanced beer market is to ensure drinkers know who they are supporting when they buy a pint. Beavertown and Camden are examples of beers that have pushed genuinely local beers off the bar and damaged choice and variety. You only have to look at the line up in most pub cos to see that, post pandemic, choice has been severely limited".
"So we would urge drinkers to support their local, independent brewers and support a vibrant, distinctly British beer culture. Rupert Thompson, Hogs Back Brewery MD".
