TEA Total pubs: The Wheatsheaf, Camberley

We supply TEA to many beautiful, historic pubs, which have been at the heart of their communities for hundreds of years. The Wheatsheaf, in Heatherside on the edge of Camberley however is a much more recent pub having been built in the 1970s but has been a fixture of the community's landscape from the day it opened. In 2018, the Wheatsheaf was one of 5 pubs to receive Grade II listing by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport based on their unique design and how they reflected a change to communities and neighbourhoods in Post-War Britain. We've gone to take a closer look.

The Wheatsheaf opened as a free house in May 1971 by the prominent architects John and Sylvia Reid who were also known for eccentric church and community hall design. The pub’s name was chosen with reference to Sir Frederick Hastings Goldney, the former owner of the land on which the development was built, whose crest prominently bore a wheatsheaf. Architects would describe it as having a 'decagonal ratchet-wheel layout, around a central chimney column' whereas pub-goers might say 'it has plenty of cosy snugs for a quiet catch-up and comfy sofas around the big fire to warm-up around whilst supping a pint'.

After nearly 50 years of use, the pub was in desperate need of some TLC and received a full refurbishment last year, re-opening on the 31st October. As well as breathing new life into the fixtures and fittings, they added a large mezzanine level to create a separate dining area servicing a full menu and sports bar menu. The sports bar was extended creating a large area dedicated to sports with a pool table, Darts Board and 4G TV’s to watch all live sporting events whilst the garden was re-landscaped.

We aim to be the hub of the community, and work closely with local groups to help support their work, but also to help breed a great community spirit, we have already supported lots of local charities and intend to help many more in the future. Plus, Hogs Back fans will be happy to hear that a great pint of TEA and a warm welcome awaits you at the Wheatsheaf.

Any decent pub has a good programme of regular events and The Wheatsheaf certainly doesn't disappoint. They have fortnightly Pub Quiz Nights, Fortnightly Karaoke, Monthly Live music as well as occasional comedy nights too.
