Spent grain goes to good home! - Hogs Back Brewery

Spent grain goes to good home!

Gentle giants George and Bowler have been feasting on our spent grain this summer.

These heavy horses are used to munching left over malt from the mash tun during the cold months of winter.  Even after the all-important sugars needed for fermenting our beer have been extracted from the malted barley, there’s enough residual sugars and goodness left, to make ideal nutritional animal feed.

But the prolonged heat of the summer left their grass for grazing too sparse and dry, so the spent grain came as a welcome nourishing treat for black Shire horse, George, and chestnut, rare breed Suffolk Punch, Bowler.

The spent grain, dug out of the mash tun by hand, is collected regularly by owner John.  These working horses will no doubt be looking forward to their winter rations!  While it all helps to make our brewing more sustainable.
