Scouts learning in the hop garden
St Peter and Paul Scouts from Godalming joined Estate Manager Matthew in the Hop Garden this week.
Working towards their Farming Activity Badge - which is designed to learn about the process behind the food on our plates, get some hands-on practical experience and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world - the Scouts learned about how hops are grown and why…..

…..tried their hand at twiddling….

….and planted up sunflower and pea seeds.

These seeds were specially chosen by Matthew as these food crops both bring other benefits to nature.
Sunflowers not only produce a crop that can be made into oil for cooking, but they also attract all sorts of pollinators.
Peas taste great but also put nutrients back into the soil.
The Scouts will be nurturing their seeds at home, keeping track of their progress in a diary over the next three months, all as part of the Farming Activity Badge.

With soft drinks and slices of pizza to finish, all good time was had by all. With all the enthusiasm on display, we are sure they'll all be successful in achieving their Farming Activity badge!
