Picking Poor Man's Asparagus
The sun shone as Tongham TEA Club members gathered poor man's asparagus in the hop garden.
The hop plants are producing far more shoots than they need and in order to concentrate the goodness back into the hop plant, the extraneous shoots are cut off. These hops shoots were traditionally called poor man's asparagus and eaten.
