Meet Brewing Operator Jack - Hogs Back Brewery

Meet Brewing Operator Jack

Brewing Operator Jack has taken to brewing like a duck to water and feels right at home as part of the Brew Team here. We caught up with Jack to find out a bit more about how his passion for beer has given his career a whole new direction….

Q: How long have you been at Hogs Back Brewery?

A: Just coming up to 3 months now.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself......

A: I come from a very different background to brewing.  A former Physiotherapist and oxygen specialist by training, I have an analytical mind for processes.  I like to relax by miniature model painting and gaming, so I think I am a bit of a nerd!  Add to that I am an avid sports enthusiast and cinephile, not to mention I am a proud new dad!

Q: So how did you get into brewing?

A: All through home brewing. Despite numerous failed experiments in the early days, it really helped me improve my knowledge and understanding of the brewing process and kit. With that, I decided to change career path and work in Production. After working in a chocolate factory and later with cereal bars, I cut my teeth brewing cask ales with a couple of local breweries, as well as crafting some of my own recipes in a 1HL rented brewery space. That’s when I knew that brewing was the career for me.

Q: What is your favourite beer and why?

A: Tough question and I wouldn’t like to discriminate - I think there’s a beer for every occasion and every season. My most recent success at home was a nitro poured coffee milk stout, which was divine. Amongst others I’d say cask Jaipur, or a traditionally poured Budvar; 5 o’clock on a Friday is definitely lager time!

Q: Who would you most like to share a beer with and why?

Not to be too sentimental, but I’ll always cherish a brew with my Dad, Paul. We don’t always agree, but he has always been my best mentor, friend, and cheerleader. And beer is definitely best when shared with friends and family.

We are sure Jack will continue to impress here at the brewery and will have some great news ideas for beers based on his home brewing experiments!
