Hops Hit the Top!
Legend has it that the hops should be at the top of their 16 foot posts by the longest day.
Matthew was out and about in the hop garden on 21st June to check and we're happy to report that Farnham White is going great guns!
Now these shoots have reached the top, these bines don't have anywhere else to climb, so they will start to put their energy into producing laterals - or pairs of side shoots - along the length of the bine. These side shoots will ultimately produce the pins, then the burrs, and finally the hop cones themselves.
Our Cascade is notoriously slow and this year, the Fuggles plants have a way to go before they catch the Farnham White Bine. But Matthew will be keeping a close eye on them over the next couple of weeks!
