Perfect summer for cider apples
While it may not have been the ideal summer for holidaymakers, it has brought a splendid cider apple harvest. So say our friends and fellow family business, Thatchers, who produce our Hazy Hog cider for us.
All that wet weather has provided the trees, in Thatchers’ 500 acres of orchards, with plenty of water, resulting in some of the juiciest apples in recent years. Great news for Hazy Hog lovers!
The news comes as National Apple Day was celebrated across the UK on 21st October 2024, paying tribute to the rich heritage and diversity of apple varieties grown across the country.
According to Chris Muntz-Torres, Thatchers’ orchard manager, “The mix of weather we’ve seen – plenty of rain followed by bursts of warm sunshine – has been exactly what our apples need. It’s helped the fruit ripen slowly and develop the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, ready to be pressed into our award-winning ciders.”
This year, Thatchers Cider is celebrating a landmark 120th harvest at Myrtle Farm in Somerset. So if you are passing, why not book up for a tour to find out how they craft their cider?
Hazy Hog is a full flavoured 5% Cider made traditionally by adding back the bittersweet apple juice after fermentation and part maturation in large oak vats, which creates the Cidre Doux style of Brittany and Normandy. Cloudy, gently sparkling and wonderfully 'appley'. Buy now
