Burrs beginning to show in the Hop Garden
The burrs are beginning to appear in the Hop Garden.

These spiky little burrs are a precursor to the all-important hops – so a sure sign the hops are on the way.

Yesterday’s torrential downpour of rain was welcome but the hops have stopped putting out their laterals (the pairs of leaves along the length of the bine), so like hop-growers country wide, Matthew is expecting a smaller harvest this year.

Whilst out in the Hop Garden, Matthew has spotted a multitude of male hop plants. It’s the female plants which produce the hops, but a few male plants are needed for obvious reasons!

Luckily, the next door wheat field has already been harvested…..

…and the birds have been busy gleaning the spilt grain.
