Q: How does it feel to be a qualified beer sommelier?
A: Becoming a qualified beer sommelier is less like flipping a switch and more like your senses gradually levelling up. For me, it is a mix of pride, professional achievement, and sensory awakening. First, there’s a real sense of accomplishment - certifications like this aren’t easy - you’ve trained your palate, studied styles, learned about brewing, and passed pretty demanding exams. So, when you qualify, it feels earned! Perhaps the bigger shift is how you experience beer itself. You stop just “drinking” and start analysing aroma, mouthfeel, balance, off flavours. A simple pint turns into layers of citrus, esters, malt sweetness, and bitterness structure. It’s similar to how a musician can’t un-hear the individual instruments in a song anymore.
Q: How will being a beer sommelier help you going forward?
A: Professionally, it gives you credibility and options. It signals to customers and contacts the passion and effort you have made in deepening your beer knowledge. It also sharpens your decision-making and sensory skills. You get better at identifying quality, spotting flaws, and understanding why something works or doesn’t. The beer world is surprisingly tight knit - certification can connect you with brewers, importers, bar owners, and other sommeliers. Those relationships can lead to collaborations, job opportunities, or side projects.
Q: Any advice for someone considering the Beer Sommelier training?
A: If you’re thinking about beer sommelier training, the biggest thing to know is this: it’s as much about training your senses and discipline as it is about learning facts. It is a fun yet challenging journey into fascinating world of beer.
